Here in the Reception class at St Hilda’s school Harpenden we have had a very industrious first few weeks of term. Since arriving in September we have been working very hard on our listening skills and learning so many new routines now that we have all started full time school.  We can find our way around the school as we know where the dining room, the hall, the library, the office, the playground, the field and most importantly our classroom is!

Everyday when we arrive at school we hang up our coats and put our book bags in the box before choosing from one of the activities set out in the classroom for us to do. We can all do this independently now.  We are learning all of our sounds and by half term will have done at least 30 of them! We are learning to recognise them, say their name and sound, blend them together to make words and how to write them correctly.  We are working very hard to remember where each letter starts when we write them and to make our tall letters tall and our short letters short. Phew!

We also have had great fun exploring numbers and shapes during Maths.  We play many different games to help us recognise a numeral and to begin to understand the concept of the amount that each number represents.  We love working with the numicon number shapes and are getting very quick at recognising each piece.  We had a fun shape hunt around the school looking for shapes in our environment.  We spotted lots of squares, circles and rectangles easily in the doors windows and decorations around the school. We found triangles harder to find but suddenly spotted some bunting hanging up in the dining room that was made from lots of triangles.

We have also loved exploring our outdoor area in both the rain and the sunshine! We love riding on the bikes and playing imaginatively with all the toys.  One of our favourite games lately has been to pretend to be Drs and Vets!
