Reception Half Term News

4th February 25

Here in the Reception class as St Hilda’s School we have been travelling back in time to learn about dinosaurs this half  term. Mrs Johnstone brought her magic carpet to school which we learnt to fly. It is powered by our imaginations and can fly us to any destination that we wish it to. We have taken a couple of flights to visit a time on planet Earth millions of years ago when the dinosaurs roamed the planet.

We have been learning many interesting facts about dinosaurs. The word dinosaur means terrible lizard in Greek. Dinosaurs lived on the Earth for about 165 million years until they became extinct approximately 65.5 million years ago. People who study dinosaurs are called palaeontologists. They have learnt a lot about dinosaurs from discovering dinosaur fossils and old bones buried under the ground.

Some dinosaurs such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex or the T-Rex have strong teeth and like to eat meat or other dinosaurs. These are called carnivores. Other dinosaurs prefer to eat leaves from the trees or plants. These are called herbivores.

We have had great fun making, building, painting, imagining and designing our own dinosaurs. We have made some Tyrannosaurus Rex’s with large teeth and powerful jaws. Some Triceratops that have three sharp horns and a frill around their necks and some Stegosaurus with pointy plates along their backs and a long tall with a spike at the end. We have also made and painted some long necked dinosaurs such as the Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus..

After this we learnt about Pterodactyls which are not a dinosaur but a type of giant flying lizard belonging to the pterosaur family. They were around and became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs. If come into our classroom you will find all sorts of dinosaurs roaming our walls and pterosaurs flying above our heads! It has been so interesting to begin to learn about dinosaurs this term!
