Form One Spring 1 News – February 2025

13th February 25

Phew! We can’t believe we have already finished the first half of the Spring Term. We have been so busy in Form One. We started the term off by looking at selfie photographs from our amazing Christmas holidays. We all had so much fun at home, but couldn’t wait to get working on our new topics.

In Science, we began our new topic of ‘Materials’. We helped Mrs Bishop to sort the Christmas decorations she had taken down from her Christmas tree. We discovered they were made from different materials, including wood, metal, fabric, fur, glass, clay and cardboard. We sorted them into groups discussing their properties, before Mrs Bishop stored them away safely until next Christmas! We then used lots of different materials over the half-term to explore, test and learn which objects are made from them.

In Art, we have been discovering about a special artist, Yayoi Kusama. She is a Japanese artist, who is obsessed with polka dots. We loved working collaboratively to produce a super work of art, using her painting style. We then used clay to make beautiful flowers and added polka dots for interest.

On January 29th, we celebrated the Lunar New Year with an incrediable dance workshop, delicious Chinese food, and crafting decorative snakes to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

In Geography this term we have been looking at the world around us. We have had a focus on maps and the information they give us. We have looked at OS maps, world maps, globes and road maps. We have also talked about looking at things from a ‘bird’s eye view’ and then made a map or a plan of our own classroom making sure we only drew what we would see if we were flying in the air like a bird! We have looked at ‘keys’ on maps and why we have them. The girls thoroughly enjoyed a session with the OS maps finding all the blue symbols used and working out what they meant!

We were so proud of our displays in the classroom, that we decided to invite our parents in to see them. Our classroom turned into an art gallery and we enjoyed having a look round on a dark and cold evening!

We decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day, by making our families a special card in Wassily Kandinsky’s style of painting! When we had painted our hearts, we walked around the room to view all of our friends’ work, comparing them and commenting positively on all of the different paintings.  In English, we then wrote our cards indendently, even stuck them together on our own (hence a few may be upside down!)

In English, we have been enjoying our focused Show and Tell sessions – ‘What I might like to be when I am grown up!’ We have so far had doctors, scientists, inventors and detectives. We can’t wait to hear more next half-term and also to take part in a ‘Future Jobs Day!’ Later on in the term in our History lessons we will be learning about famous, influential people and their jobs!

We ended the half-term on a high, by joining Reception to perform two shows of our super, seasonal play, ‘Hats Off!’ We loved singing, dancing, acting and narrating the play. Have a lovely half-term holiday everyone!
