We have been learning about Materials in Science. We have worked on lots of different scientific activities over the last few weeks. We have been on a Materials Hunt around the classroom. We have looked closely at different materials and learnt lots of new scientific words to describe them. We have carried out experiments to find the right materials to make strong new homes for Paddington Bear in the Amazon Rainforest, and also carried out an experiment to find the perfect material to fix a broken umbrella and help it to stand up against the spring rain and storms. We are even going to do an Easter Materials Challenge next week, where we have to think of the best materials to protect real eggs!
We learnt about a charity, called Living Paintings, https://livingpaintings.org/ and how they make tactile ‘feely’ books for children and adults. We decided to use our knowledge of materials to make a tactile book for our youngest class in the school, the Puffin Class.
We decided to make a version of the Usborne books ‘That’s Not My….’ for the class, and had the super idea to use the puffin as the main character.
We each made a page for the book, writing the text and making a feely collage alongside it. We then took time to make a front cover, title page, illustrations, and even a blurb. We spoke with Mrs Matthews and Mrs Tull and asked them if they would like us to come and share the story with the class. We were so excited to be able to share it with them.
We turned ourselves into mini puffins and made our way down to the Puffin Classroom. We took turns to read our own pages and loved sharing our illustrations with the children. The Puffins listened beautifully and enjoyed our story.
Thank you for being our amazing audience, Puffins. What a super story Form One. We are becoming real authors!
