Form One – Hertfordshire Zoo Trip

8th October 24

We were excited to be going on our first outing in Form One – A trip to Hertfordshire Zoo, to support our Science topic work. We loved jumping on the coach for the quick journey to Broxbourne.

We started our zoo trip with a quick, but terrifying look around the Dinosaur World; huge moving model dinosaurs. We discovered they were mainly reptiles, with a few birds too. We even had the chance to become archaeologists, hunting for Tyrannosauras-Rex’s bones. We loved being sprayed by the spitting dinosaur at the end!

We then entrered the main zoo and enjoyed searching for different wild animals. These included lions, tigers, crocodiles, emus, snakes and otters. We tried to work out which animal group they belonged to.

We enjoyed a brilliant workshop with Zoo Keeper, Becky. She led a session called Fur, Feathers and Scales. We learnt about the different ways we can group animals and used our super scientific detective skills to group different animals from Hertfordshire Zoo. Can you remember the main features of birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and fish? Becky showed us some amazing artifacts, including python skin, skulls, feathers and porcupine spines.

We stopped for a quick lunch stop while it was pouring, but we were warm and dry under the shelter!

We went on to visit more animals, including sloths, gibbons and snow leopards.

Finally, we had an exciting Mini Meet session with Becky, learning more about the penguins. We found out that you can identify them by the spots on their chest. They are very clever birds, because they are camoflauged from the surface of the water looking down at their black feathers and also looking up at them with their white feathers.

Phew! What a busy day. We loved our visit to Hertfordshire Zoo, so much so that many of us are planning another trip with our families very soon.
